<p>Le <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/527991/jewish/Le-Rabbi.htm" title="Le Rabbi">Rabbi de Loubavitch, Rabbi Mena’hem Mendel Schneerson</a>, septième héritier de la dynastie du <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/490879/jewish/Le-Mouvement-Habad-Loubavitch.htm" title="Le Mouvement ‘Habad-Loubavitch">‘Hassidisme Habad-Loubavitch</a>, est considéré comme étant la personnalité juive la plus phénoménale des temps modernes. Pour des centaines de milliers d’adeptes et des millions de sympathisants et d’admirateurs à travers le monde, il était – et demeure, malgré son décès – « le Rabbi », sans aucun doute l’individu responsable plus que tout autre du regain de conscience et d’éveil spirituel du monde juif.</p>
<p>Le Rabbi naquit en 1902, le <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/495185/jewish/Le-11-Nissan-lanniversaire-du-Rabbi.htm" title="Le 11 Nissan, l’anniversaire du Rabbi">11 Nissan</a> (18 avril) à Nikolaiev en Ukraine au foyer de <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/3393913/jewish/Rabbi-Lvi-Itshak-Schneerson-1878-1944.htm" title="Rabbi Lévi Its’hak Schneerson (1878-1944)">Reb Levi Its’hak</a> et de <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/2716813/jewish/La-Rabbanit-Hanna-Schneerson.htm" title="La Rabbanit 'Hanna Schneerson">la Rabbanit ‘Hanna</a>. Il doit de porter le même patronyme que Rabbi Yossef Its’hak, son futur beau-père auquel il succèdera, au fait que tous deux descendent, à travers deux lignées différentes, de <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/1207671/jewish/Rabbi-Menahem-Mendel-le-Tsmah-Tsdek-1789-1866.htm" title="Rabbi Mena’hem Mendel, le Tséma’h Tsédek (1789-1866)">Rabbi Mena’hem Mendel de Loubavitch</a>, troisième de la lignée, le célèbre Tsema’h Tsédek, dont le nom lui fut donné. Il passera sa <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/527924/jewish/1902-Enfance.htm" title="1902: Enfance ">jeunesse</a> à Yekatrinoslav (rebaptisée Dniepropetrovsk par les bolcheviks) dont son père <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="36627">Rav</span> <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="35973">Levi</span> Its’hak est le rabbin.</p>
<p><span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="36733">Rav</span> <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/4254752/jewish/Who-Were-the-Levites.htm" title="Who Were the Levites?">Levi</a> Its’hak est un maître inspiré de la Kabbale, qui explore le <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="35077">Zohar</span> et le <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="33656">Talmud</span> en identifiant les âmes de leurs Maîtres aux sphères du divin. En 1911, au moment de l’affaire Beilis, la dernière et spectaculaire affaire de meurtre rituel, il sera chargé de constituer le dossier kabbalistique de l’instruction. On dit que le petit « meka » qui a alors neuf ans lui sera d’une aide précieuse.</p>
<p>Contre toute attente, le futur Rabbi de Loubavitch ne fréquentera pas de Yéchiva. En dehors d’un premier maître avec lequel il fera ses premiers pas dans les textes – et auquel il vouera une éternelle déférence –, son père sera son unique précepteur. On aime à dire de tels personnages que dès leur tendre enfance ils étaient des prodiges. En l’occurrence, l’euphémisme est émouvant. <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="36633">Reb</span> Levik prescrit à son fils un cursus de 16 heures d’études quotidiennes allouées à la <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="35016">Torah</span> et lui abandonne les huit qui restent pour s’alimenter, dormir et... pour les études profanes avec différents professeurs de la ville dont la communauté juive est une pépinière d’intellectuels. L’enfant soutient le défi. Il accumule les lectures, dévore des dictionnaires de langues, tout en passant le plus clair de son temps à étudier les ouvrages dont il devra un jour assurer l’héritage. Sa chambre est tapissée de cartes astronomiques. Sa mère se plait à vanter ses capacités d’absorption – celles qui lui permettront, le moment venu, de dicter la réponse à une lettre en en lisant trois autres. On sait également qu’il ne prise guère les distractions de son âge et que les livres sont déjà sa patrie.</p>

<p>Pour les qualités humaines, sa mère relatera tardivement qu’il sauta à l’âge de dix ans dans le Dniepr gelé pour sauver un enfant qui se noyait et qu’il manquera d’être emporté par le typhus contracté lors d’une épidémie après s’être porté secouriste volontaire. Peu de choses tout de même au regard de ce que l’avenir révélera. Le jeune homme s’intéresse à tout. C’est à dire à tous les déploiements intellectuels dont il fera plus tard usage pour valoriser le Créateur et la profession de foi rédemptrice de la <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/1426382/jewish/Torah.htm" title="What Is the Torah?">Torah</a>. Il s’inscrit en candidat libre dans divers établissements et y obtient des diplômes. La chose jure un peu avec l’orthodoxie de son extraction, mais ce ne sera que le premier des paradoxes dont le personnage foisonnera.</p>

</section><section><h2>Mariage à Varsovie</h2>
<p>Au moment où il rencontre <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/932273/jewish/Rabbi-Yossef-Itshak-Schneersohn-1880-1950.htm" title="Rabbi Yossef Its’hak Schneersohn (1880 – 1950)">Rabbi Yossef Its’hak</a> en 1923, à Rostov, il est quasiment inconnu de la communauté ‘hassidique qui campe autour du maître. Elle est même un peu surprise par ce jeune homme de vingt et un ans, impeccablement mis, et aux manières raffinées assez peu rencontrées sous ses latitudes, d’autant plus que l’on saura vite que le sémillant jeune homme est destiné à épouser la dernière des filles du Rabbi : <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/629549/jewish/Quelques-anecdotes-difiantes.htm" title="Quelques anecdotes édifiantes ">‘Haya Mouchka</a>. Le Rabbi rassure ses disciples en attestant que ce jeune homme un peu suspect sait mot à mot les deux <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/2537389/jewish/Talmud.htm" title="Talmud">Talmud</a> et les grands décisionnaires, et que les larmes qu’il verse lors du <i>Tikoun ‘hatsot</i> – ces lamentations que les très pieux récitent quotidiennement à minuit – sont indicibles.</p>

<p>En 1927, l’enfer carcéral du bolchevisme commence à broyer les institutions religieuses et Rabbi Yossef Its’hak qui ne laisse planer nulle équivoque sur le mépris qu’il voue à ce régime et du peu de cas qu’il fait de son règlement est arrêté. La sentence de mort prononcée contre lui est <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/700996/jewish/Le-12-Tamouz.htm" title="Le 12 Tamouz">miraculeusement</a> commuée en exil et durant l’été suivant, il doit quitter la patrie du ‘Hassidisme pour Riga ou il établira six ans durant son « gouvernement en exil ». Il emmène sa famille, ses proches disciples et son futur gendre qui fait un ultime adieu à parents.</p>
<p>Le 27 novembre 1928 à Varsovie, Rabbi Mena’hem Mendel épouse la fille de Rabbi Yossef Its’hak, <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/629549/jewish/Quelques-anecdotes-difiantes.htm" title="Quelques anecdotes édifiantes ">la Rabbanit ‘Haya Mouchka</a>. Lors de ce mariage, la capitale polonaise, haut lieu s’il en fut, du Judaïsme d’Europe centrale connaîtra une de ses dernières effervescences avant l’épouvante. Des sommités rabbiniques dont le lieu foisonnait à l’époque, eurent alors l’occasion de mesurer la texture intellectuelle de cet homme apparu ganté de blanc qui leur fournit une matière édifiante.</p>
<p>Le nouveau couple part ensuite s’installer à Berlin où le futur Rabbi fréquentera l’université, et un grand nombre d’intellectuels juifs dont la cité s’honore encore (il se souviendra par la suite y avoir vu Albert Einstein jouer du violon...) En 1933, la montée au pouvoir du nazisme les fait quitter Berlin pour Paris. Là, il fréquentera la Sorbonne et d’autres établissements de l’enseignement supérieur tout en revivifiant l’esprit des nombreux réfugiés que la tourmente commence à déverser dans la Ville des lumières. Il assure aussi un cours quotidien à l’oratoire du 17 rue des Rosiers.</p>
<p>Ceux qui fréquentent le couple, qui habite à quelques encablures de la station Mouton Duvernet, attesteront que l’ouverture de cet homme aux êtres et aux idées cohabite avec une piété méticuleuse. De son séjour dans la capitale française, le Rabbi gardera toute sa vie un attachement particulier au judaïsme français, dont l’histoire par la suite le lui rendra bien. Au point même que lors d’un mémorable Sim’hat Torah en 1974 à New York, auquel assistaient quelque cinq cent Français, devant une communauté médusée, il fit danser les Français sur l’air de... <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/1976501/jewish/La-Rvolution-franaise-du-Rabbi.htm" title="La Révolution française du Rabbi">la Marseillaise</a> qu’il entonna sur les paroles d’un cantique à la gloire de D.ieu, récité le Chabbat et les Fêtes à la synagogue.</p>
<p>En 1941, l’invasion de la France le fait quitter Paris pour la Zone libre. Son périple le conduit à Vichy puis à Nice. Certains témoignages attestent qu’il y aura des liens avec la Résistance locale, et qu’il emmènera même des jeunes en montagne la nuit pour confectionner des Matsot à l’approche de Pessah.</p>
<p>Entre temps, en Russie, son père exaspère les bolcheviks en refusant de jouer leur jeu. Une nuit précédant la Fête de Pessa’h 1939, le NKVD fait irruption chez lui et l’emmène. Après avoir transité de prison en prison, il est envoyé en exil dans un cloaque du Kazakhstan où il quittera ce monde le 9 août (20 <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="37012">Av</span>) 1944 dans une pitoyable déchéance physique. C’est là-bas qu’avec de l’encre confectionnée par son épouse - laquelle l’aura rejoint entre temps - il écrira ses commentaires kabbalistiques du <a href="/kabbalah/article_cdo/aid/380596/jewish/What-Is-the-Zohar.htm" title="What Is the Zohar?">Zohar</a>, sur les marges des quelques livres qu’il aura pu emporter. Son fils les publiera par la suite et les commentera abondamment.</p>
</section><section><h2>Arrivée au Etats-Unis</h2>
<p>En mai 1941, le Rabbi et son épouse embarquent à Marseille pour Barcelone. Peu après, ils embarqueront à Lisbonne pour <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/1556572/jewish/1941-Le-28-Sivan.htm" title="1941: Le 28 Sivan">accoster à New York</a> le 23 juin 1941. Son beau-père s’y trouve depuis mars 1940 après avoir échappé d’une façon aussi rocambolesque que miraculeuse à l’anéantissement des Juifs de Varsovie.</p>

<p>Le Mena’hem Schneerson qui arrive à New York est aussi méconnu de la colonie Loubavitch américaine qu’il l’était de l’entourage de son beau-père en Russie. Il est enjoué, plein d’humour et de distinction, mais très réservé. Dans un premier temps, il se consacre exclusivement à la maison d’édition fondée par son beau-père et qui s’est donnée pour tâche de publier l’immense patrimoine accumulé depuis deux siècles.</p>
<p>Mais la santé de son beau-père décline et il est appelé à le remplacer pour célébrer les <i>Farbrenguen</i>, ces réunions ‘hassidiques lors desquelles les interventions du Rabbi alternent avec les chants. C’est ici que l’on va découvrir la trempe de ce charmant intellectuel que son beau-père appelle « mon ministre de la culture ». Dans ses interventions il fait sauter les clivages qui cloisonnent apparemment les diverses disciplines du savoir accumulé par la tradition juive. Le <i>pilpoul</i> talmudique est soudain chamarré de Kabbale, le sens littéral devient écarlate quand la sève du ‘Hassidisme ‘Habad les irrigue et les irradie. Cet homme qui n’a pas cinquante ans fait boire, danser, exulter et réfléchir des doctes qui ont parfois deux fois son âge et qui n’aperçoivent rien de semblable dans leur expérience passée.</p>
<p>Au printemps 1947, il fait son ultime voyage à l’étranger en revenant à Paris accueillir sa mère qui a réussi à quitter l’Union soviétique. Il ne quittera plus jamais son fief de Crown Heights à Brooklyn.</p>
</section><section><h2>Leadership</h2>
<p>Le <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/624769/jewish/1950-1951-Le-10-Chevat.htm" title="1950-1951: Le 10 Chevat">10 Chevat 5711</a>, 17 janvier 1951, Rabbi Mena’hem Mendel Schneerson s’assoit sur le siège laissé vacant, par le départ de son beau-père un an auparavant et devient le septième Rabbi de Loubavitch. Il abat très vite ses cartes et sa profession de foi se résume en un mot : « <i>Oufaratsta</i> », la diffusion de la Torah et de ses valeurs vers tous les horizons juifs qu’elles n’ont pas encore atteintes. C’est le saut à corps perdu dans cette entreprise qui attestera du véritable attachement de ses ‘hassidim à son enseignement. D’un ghetto où s’est replié un quarteron de juifs timorés par un passé traumatisant, il fera une citadelle ou afflueront chaque année des dizaines de milliers de juifs venus de tous horizons intellectuels et géographiques. Les <i>Farbrenguen</i> qu’il célèbre – lesquels peuvent parfois durer huit heures et plus, et durant lesquels il discourt sans notes – exaltent jusqu’à ceux qui n’entendent pas un mot à son <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="32511">yiddish</span> talmudique et didactique.</p>
<p>Dans ce foisonnement d’enseignements, une profession de foi générique : le refus de relativiser le moindre aspect d’une Torah divine, servi par un désir effréné d’asseoir chaque enseignement dans le monde du concret. Son sourire ne laisse personne intact et personne ne sait résister à un mouvement de son bras lorsqu’il demande d’augmenter la vigueur du chant, ou lorsqu’il porte deux doigts vers sa bouche pour demander de ...siffler. Le déploiement in extenso de toutes ses interventions approche la centaine de volumes... Il discourt et chante, mais écrit aussi, et à tous. Aux rabbins, aux hommes d’État, à des artistes, des écrivains – <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/1885006/jewish/Grandeur.htm" title="Grandeur">Élie Wiesel</a> compte parmi ceux dont il a marqué l’esprit – à des enfants et à tous ceux qui recherchent son conseil, qui dans le domaine de la Torah, qui pour son travail qui pour ses études... Quelque trente volumes de sa correspondance ont été publiés</p>
<p>Il reçoit aussi beaucoup. Pendant plus de trois décennies, il donnera à raison de deux nuits par semaine des audiences privées lors desquelles, durant parfois un tour de cadran, il écoute et conseille ceux qui auront sollicité une entrevue. Tous ceux qui auront vécu l’un de ses instants en resteront définitivement marqués. Il intercède aussi pour ceux qui lui en font la demande. Il passe régulièrement des heures, à jeun, et parfois sous un soleil de plomb à lire, sur la sépulture de son beau-père, les demandes de bénédictions qui affluent tous les jours à son secrétariat.</p>
<p>Après un accident cardiaque au beau milieu de la joie des danses de la Fête de Sim’hat Torah en 1977, il met son entourage à la torture en refusant de prendre du repos. À 76 ans, après avoir récupéré d’un épisode qui incite généralement à lever le pied, il repart de plus belle. Il célèbre un <i><span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="29900">Farbrengen</span></i> toutes les semaines, sans compter des interventions publiques inopinées à l’issue des offices du soir. Pour couronner le tout, les audiences particulières interrompues après son incident cardiaque reprennent en la matière du « dollar » qu’il distribue chaque dimanche matin à des centaines de personnes qui passent devant lui - parfois pendant huit heures d’affilée - et demandent sa bénédiction et son conseil. Il y en a pour tout le monde : religieux, non-religieux, hommes, femmes et enfants, célébrités de toutes sphères. Certains échanges, saisis lors de ces moments, constituent des morceaux d’anthologie du rayonnement moral et de la sensibilité à autrui.</p>

<p>Au début des années 80, le Rabbi passe l’ultime et incontournable vitesse. Il annonce que les pas du Messie résonnent déjà et engage tous ceux qui aspirent à eux à les hâter en s’en faisant l’écho par <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/710293/jewish/Machiah.htm" title="Machia’h">l’étude des enseignements et des lois liés à l’époque messianique</a>, en s’attachant à convaincre tous ceux qu’ils peuvent atteindre que la venue du Messie est une réalité qui n’attend que notre foi en elle pour prendre corps. Dès lors à chacune de ses interventions il accentuera encore l’urgence de l’effort à déployer pour faire aboutir l’ultime parachèvement de la Création.</p>
<p>Au début des années 90, il déclare que les bouleversements politiques intervenus en Europe et qui mettent fin à la Guerre Froide sont un signe caractéristique du prochain avènement messianique. Il relie le fait que ces mutations se soient effectuées sans effusion de sang aux prémices d’une ère de paix universelle.</p>
<p>Lorsque éclate la première Guerre du Golfe, il déclare qu’il s’agit de la réalisation des termes du <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="32468">Midrash</span> Yalkout Chimoni annonçant, pour « l’année où le Machia’h se dévoilera », la guerre du dirigeant de la « Perse » (qui avait dans l’Antiquité sa capitale à Bagdad) contre un pays arabe et le désarroi mondial qui en résultera. Le Rabbi ne cesse d’encourager la population d’Erets Israël et annonce prophétiquement qu’il n’y aura à craindre aucune attaque non conventionnelle et que la guerre se terminera à Pourim, contrairement aux prévisions de tous les experts stratégiques. Dans la confusion régnante, il est la seule voix qui rassérène et donne espoir aux Juifs du monde entier.</p>

<p>Le soir du 12 avril (28 Nissan) 1991, dans <a href="/article.asp?AID=1180307" aid="1180307">une intervention</a> d’une vigueur et d’une intensité jamais atteintes, il admoneste ses ‘hassidim en disant son amertume et sa déception de n’avoir pas vu accomplir tout l’effort qu’il sollicitait pour susciter l’avènement messianique. Avec quelques soupçons perceptibles de dépit, il affirme avoir accompli le travail qui relevait de sa tâche et que le reste appartient désormais à ceux qui l’écoutent.</p>
<p>Il passera l’année qui suivra à commenter la section hebdomadaire de la Torah en s’attachant particulièrement à montrer comment le monde dans sa finitude aussi bien que l’homme, tout humain qu’il soit, sont des vecteurs de l’Infini. Engageant chacun à révéler cette dimension dans sa vie quotidienne, il ne cesse d’annoncer que nous nous trouvons désormais au seuil de la Rédemption et qu’il suffit « d’ouvrir les yeux » pour en prendre conscience.</p>

<p>Le 27 <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="36159">Adar</span> (2 mars) 1992, alors qu’il se trouve sur la sépulture de son beau-père, une violente attaque cérébrale le soustrait aux yeux d’une communauté juive suspendue à ses lèvres.</p>
<p>Après des mois d’une convalescence lors de laquelle il n’a cessé de répondre aux demandes de bénédictions et désormais atteint d’hémiplégie, il réapparaît dans sa synagogue le jour de Roch Hachana de l’année 5753, à l’automne 1992. Au prix de grands efforts physiques, il tiendra à assister aux offices quotidiens, à l’occasion desquels les ‘hassidim lui témoignent de leur attachement à la mission qu’il leur a imparti.</p>
<p>Le <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/695290/jewish/Le-3-Tamouz.htm" title="Le 3 Tamouz">3 Tamouz 5754</a>, le 12 juin 1994, il disparaît aux yeux d’un monde qui résonne encore quotidiennement de ses enseignements sur tous les horizons de la planète, nous laissant la promesse de la Délivrance et l’injonction de travailler « de nos propres forces », de celles des profondeurs de l’âme, pour en concrétiser l’avènement.</p>
<p>Que ce soit en priant au « <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/449810/jewish/Le-Ohel.htm" title="Le Ohel">Ohel</a> » où il repose auprès du Rabbi précédent ou en écrivant une <a href="/article.asp?AID=449813" aid="449813">lettre</a> qu’il est d’usage d’envoyer sur le <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="36421">Ohel</span> après l’avoir glissée dans un volume de son œuvre, tous ceux qui sont attachés à lui continuent de recevoir ses bénédictions.</p></section></div>
